What
is SCCA Solo II?

Solo
II is the SCCA brand name for autocross competition.
Solo II events are driving skill contests that emphasize the
driver's ability and the car's handling against the clock
through a course designated by traffic cones on a location
such as a parking lot or inactive airstrip. While speeds are
no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway
driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback
provides an excellent competitive experience in learning to
control a car at the limit.
George Follmer, one of the stars of racing, especially in SCCA's
Trans-Am Championship, began his illustrious racing career
with Solo II type events in Southern California. Follmer comments
that students with a grounding in Solo II type events come to
race drivers' schools with a greater knowledge of car preparation
and driving performance than those who have never tried
competing against the clock. You take this knowledge of
control and placement into racing and handle a track full
of cars with more ease than a novice with no slalom back-
ground," said Follmer of Solo II competition.
Over 1000 Regional and Divisional level Solo II events are
held across the country at the local shopping center, airport
and stadium parking lots where competitors can find a large
amount of pavement or concrete to layout their courses.
The sport attracts ordinary sports and sports-type cars
used for daily transportation as well as heavily modified
vehicles used for racing purposes only. It is not uncommon
for Detroit Region events to host over 100 cars and the
more competitive Divisional events will often attract over
200 competitors. Many of the Detroit Region autocrosses
are organized through a multi-club cooperative known as
the Detroit Council of Sports Club Clubs (DCSCC). Participating
clubs in the DCSCC, comprising of over 1000 participants,
indeed Detroit SCCA, Michigan Sports Car Club (MSCC),
Corvette Club of Michigan (CCM), Alfa Romeo Owners Club
(AROC), and Ford Motorsports Enthusiasts (FE). The local
chapters of the VOW Audi Grippe (VAG) and the BMW
Owner's Club are investigating joining DCSCC for the 2000
Season.
The Tire Rack SCCA Solo II National Championship, held
annually in Topeka, Kansas, is the epitome of Solo II
competition. Over 900 drivers, representing nearly every
state and Canada, travel to Topeka in September to
create the world's largest autocross competition. Over
50 National Class Champions are owned in the men's and
women's Solo II classes during this week of intense
competition among the best Solo II drivers in the country.
