A Beautiful Spring Day Nice rear end

On the morning of Saturday, May 10th, passers-by gawked at the lot full of shiny Porsches. A few stopped in to ask what was going on. One inquired if the cars were for sale. All were told that it was Munk’s Motors on 4th annual Devil’s in the Details detailing seminar, an event designed for anyone who wants to take his or her vehicle to the next level, whether it’s your daily driver, the occasional tourer, or a Concours show car.

Because there’s no better time than Spring to make a car look as good as it can, over 50 guests drove in from as far away as Ann Arbor and Grand Blanc to attend the free 6-hour event. Munk’s parking lot looked like a classic showroom as Porsches of all vintages – not to mention Dave Burton’s stunning Jaguar XK120 – pulled in and parked one after the other.

Concours guru Fred Young kicked off the seminar, talking about which kinds of products to use, why it’s worth bothering to put forth the extra effort, and most importantly, what it actually takes to win at Concours events.

Detailing expert Richard Hinson, a big fan of Richard Griot’s products, followed by demonstrating spot removal with Griot’s Garage #3 Polish on a dark blue Audi A4. He specifically chose a daily driver for his demonstration rather than a pristine show car, and spent a lot of extra time just on the hood to showcase his belief that Griot's indeed makes superior products. "It’s all in the chemistry," said Hinson. "These are among the best I’ve ever used."

Later Chris Braden demonstrated how best to clean an engine and wheels – from the top down – using brushes, cleaners, and a power-washer. "Gel cleaners adhere to the wheels much better than a spray," he told everyone as he rinsed, and by the time he’d finished his presentation, the shop had sold out of P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner.

Other detailing, restoration and Concours experts including Dennis Denyer, Bob Amano, Bob Bogartt, and Gary Ambrus answered questions too, as did vendors Alloy Wheel Repair, Mike Van Loo from AutoMetric Collision, Eric Pasteiner from Auto Zone and Jason Roth from Dynamic Dents. Got an idea? A question? Bounce it off anyone there, and you’re sure to get useful feedback. At Devil’s in the Details, everyone’s eager to share information and make recommendations.

All day long Munk’s raffled off great door prizes, and at the end of the day, each guest took home a deluxe goodie bag containing enough full-size and sample-size products to get a head-start on this season’s detailing: Griot’s Carpet Cleaner; Stoner Invisible Glass Wipes, and Meguiar’s Quick Detailer spray, Gold Class Car Wash, Gold Class Dash Wipe, Quick Interior Detailer Wipes, and Scratch-X Fine Scratch and Swirl Remover.

If you missed out on this year’s festivities, watch the event listings in the newsletter next spring for the date of the 5th annual Devil’s in the Details. If you take pride in a well-kept car, and you appreciate the satisfaction of having done the work yourself, you’ll fit right in!
