VW
Scores as Super Bowl's Exclusive
Car Advertiser January
24, 2001
After
recording its best sales in the U.S. in 27 years, Volkswagen of
America
has grabbed the Super Bowl's exclusive automotive advertising
rights during
the game. This will be the first time Volkswagen has aired television
spots
during a Super Bowl broadcast.
The decision
comes on the heels of Volkswagen's best annual sales in the U.S.
since 1973. Last year, the German automaker sold 355,479 new cars,
up 12.6
percent over the year prior. Volkswagen remains the top European
car brand
sold in America.
"Who
could have predicted five years ago that in the year 2001 Volkswagen
would be the Super Bowl's exclusive car advertiser during the
game," says
Frank Maguire, Volkswagen of America's vice president in charge
of marketing
and sales. "The last few years have been incredibly successful
for Volkswagen
in the U.S., and this is a great way for us to emphasize that
and get the new
year off to an even stronger start."
Maguire
said Volkswagen will air all-new television commercials during
the game,
with a 60-second ad in the first quarter and another 60 seconds
in the third. The
specific Volkswagen models highlighted in the ads could include
the GTI, Jetta
Wolfsburg, and possibly the New Beetle sport edition.
