Munk's Motors would like to introduce you to some
of our technician's
and give you an insight into their background's and technical
experience.
Below are some of our technician's: |
Larry
Henson has been maintaining, diagnosing,
repairing, and restoring cars at the Orchard
Lake Shop for more than 22 years. Time does fly!
When Larry was 14 years old, he was already
working around stock cars, doing whatever he
could, and really enjoying it. He fixed up an
old Chevelle as a hobby / stock car, and when he
finally managed to get permission from his
parents, he started racing that car and
continued racing for 2 years at the Owosso
Speedway.
Larry wanted to continue working on cars. By the
time he talked to Chris, Larry had two auto
related jobs behind him and years of personal
experience fixing cars and working with
electronics. Chris appreciated Larry's intense
interest in the field and recognized a great
natural talent, and put him to work.
During the time he has been at Munk's Larry has
studied, taken classes, passed exams and worked
on a lot of cars. He's an ASE certified
technician with qualifications in 7 areas, he
has a BSC5 (Bosch level 5 certification), and
has studied as a specialist in automotive
electronics and diesel engines.

While experienced and qualified to work on any
car, Larry especially likes to work on the older
cars. The challenges they present suit him. The
problems of older cars are often complex,
yielding only to the diagnostic techniques
performed with an appreciation and knowledge of
the car's history. Needed parts may have long
since disappeared from any parts catalogue.
Although the managers at the shop on M-59 can
find almost any part, when they can't find it,
Larry will fabricate what's needed. He enjoys
the fabrication process - and he likes to get
the job done right. The way he puts it he "wants
to fix your car the way you would if you could."
If you talk to
Larry, he will let you know that he would rather
be doing the listening than the talking. And he
is a very good listener.
When a customer describes a problem, Larry can
make sense out of those auditory and visual
descriptions we come up with in our efforts to
explain what's happening: "My car went
'ping-ping-ponk' and then it died." But it's
equally true that when someone asks him a
question he freely shares his knowledge.
Once people have met Larry and know his work,
they're likely to ask for him. They appreciate
his integrity and workmanship. Larry enjoys
working at Vintage Munk's - he's pretty much on
his own. Vintage Munk's is small, but when he is
working on a car, he is happy to be without the
distractions and interruptions of the larger
shop.
For Larry, figuring out the problem and coming
up with the solution is pretty much the
occupation of a solitary craftsman. Since
starting work at Munk's, Larry married Kim, and
together they are raising 2 children, now ages
10 and 18. A few years ago they moved into a new
home and they are involved with several major
renovation projects. As you could expect, Larry
finds the challenge satisfying: he loves working
with wood and there are plenty of problems that
require his creative solutions, but this weekend
he will be moving some boulders . . . ? Indeed,
he has a home away from Munk's, and a wife and
family. And he enjoys the outdoors, woodworking
and just about any work with his hands. Larry
Henson doesn't live at Vintage Munk's, but
we're glad that's where he works.
